Luscious tahini caramel is a delicious sauce or topping made with healthy ingredients. This vegan caramel recipe, made with tahini and maple syrup (no refined sugar!) is ready to eat in 5 minutes, with no cooking and just 3 ingredients!

What you'll love about the recipe
- Smooth, creamy tahini caramel is perfect on pancakes, ice cream or served with fruit or dessert. You can also use it as a healthier drizzle on cakes and muffins
- Tahini is made from sesame seeds which are a good source of antioxidants, healthy fats, fibre, vitamins and minerals.
- This easy caramel sauce recipe is ready to eat in 5 minutes and can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. It's much simpler than a traditional recipe, with no need for a sugar thermometer and a burnt pan!
- Vegan, dairy free, gluten free and refined sugar free
Tahini caramel sauce is much lower in saturated fat and added sugar than a supermarket caramel sauce. However, it still contains natural sugars and should be enjoyed in moderation;)
Ingredients

Tahini. This is widely available in supermarkets, usually near the peanut butter. It should be made from 100% sesame seeds. Give the jar of tahini a good stir before you use it as it tends to separate.
Store leftover tahini in the fridge.
Maple syrup. Make sure that you buy true maple syrup rather than maple flavoured syrup which is made from cheaper less healthy syrups.
Salt. A tiny pinch of salt enhances the flavour and sweetness of the caramel, but omit it if you'd prefer. For a true salted tahini caramel flavour, add a quarter teaspoon of salt.
Substitutions
You can use runny honey as an alternative in place of maple syrup. It'll give a slightly different flavour profile, but still be equally delicious.

How to make tahini caramel sauce
Measure out the tahini and maple syrup into a small bowl.
Stir until well mixed. Add a small pinch of salt to taste.

That's it, your tahini caramel sauce is ready to enjoy!
Recipe tip
- For a thinner healthy caramel sauce, add a little non dairy milk or extra maple syrup.
Serving and storage
It's hard to think of a dessert that wouldn't be enhanced by this delicious caramel sauce!!
Try it drizzled over fruit such as bananas, slices of apple, or stewed apple.

Or enjoy a delicious pancake dessert with healthy oat pancakes (or dairy free pancakes if needed) and caramel sauce.
And for the ultimate indulgence, drizzle the sauce over ice cream.
Tahini caramel can also be used as a healthy drizzle on muffins and cakes. Try it with this sugar free ginger cake , healthy date cake or black bean brownies. You'll just need a small amount to turn them into a scrumptious dessert.
Store homemade tahini caramel in an airtight container in the fridge. It'll last for up to 2 weeks if needed, although in my experience keeping it for this long is a challenge;)
Refrigerated tahini sauce will thicken a little. Give it a good stir and thin with a little non dairy milk if necessary.
