What you'll love about the recipe

  • Slow cooker curried mince is a healthy meal, with plenty of protein, veggies and it's low in saturated fat
  • An easy minced beef curry that is great for meal prep and also freezes well
  • A dump and go slow cooker recipe - no browning required! And it's made with simple everyday ingredients
  • A tasty dinner that the family will love. You can vary the spiciness to suit your own palate, and zhoosh it up with naan bread or popadoms for a night in
  • Budget-friendly, this slow cooker beef curry is much cheaper (and healthier) than a takeaway

Slow cooker curried mince with vegetables is also known as keema curry, although I make no claims for its authenticity!! If you like the look of the recipe but aren't sure about the spices, you could also try this traditional savoury mince.

Ingredients

Minced beef, tomato puree, tinned tomatoes, onion, curry powder, garlic, ginger, carrot, peas.

Minced beef (ground beef). I recommend a low fat minced beef or minced steak for this recipe. Not only is it healthier and lower in saturated fat, it works much better in the slow cooker.

Onion and garlic add great flavour

Carrot adds a little sweetness, and it's a reason to add an extra vegetable;)

Tinned tomatoes and tomato puree add flavour colour and moisture

Grated ginger. You'll need a piece of fresh ginger about the size of your thumb to make a tablespoon of grated ginger.

Curry powder. Use a curry powder to suit your taste whether you prefer it mild or hot and spicy. If you prefer you can use 2 tablespoons of curry paste as an alternative to curry powder.

Frozen peas. This freezer favourite adds a pop of colour to slow cooker keema curry.

You'll probably find there's enough salt in the curry powder or paste, but you can add extra seasoning if preferred.

How to make slow cooker curried mince

This dump and go slow cooker (or crockpot) recipe couldn't be any simpler.

Prepare the veggies for the slow cooker. Peel and chop the onion, and peel and very finely chop or mince the garlic. Wash and grate the carrot.

Add the veggies to the slow cooker along with the grated ginger. Add the tinned tomatoes, tomato puree and curry powder. Stir to mix.

Add the minced beef to the slow cooker. Break the meat up with a spoon or spatula and stir into the veggies.

Minced beef and vegetables in crockpot.

Cook for 4 hours on high or 7-8 hours in low, whichever is more convenient.

Add the frozen peas to the slow cooker, stir and cook for a further 10 minutes.

Recipe tips

I cooked the slow cooker curried mince for 4 hours on high, and there was no need to add extra liquid as there was enough in the tomatoes, beef and vegetables. If you feel the curry is too dry, you can add 100ml of beef stock.

To stretch the recipe to serve 6, and add extra fibre, add a drained can of lentils or white beans.

Serving and storage

Slow cooked curried beef is quite filling and has plenty of veggies. But you could add some naan bread or popadoms for the full Indian curry experience!

I often serve it with brown rice and broccoli for a family meal.

Beef curry is perfect for meal prep. You can prepare everything the night before, pop it in the fridge and switch on the slow cooker in the morning.

You can store leftover beef keema in the fridge for up to 3 days.

The recipe also freezes well. Freeze in airtight container and defrost overnight in the fridge. Reheat until piping hot.

Hi, I'm sorry to hear that:( It sounds as though yours was a little overcooked. Slow cookers can vary, but even though mine has a metal insert and cooks relatively quickly, the mince still had plenty of texture.
