Ingredients
Other than water, you'll just need one ingredient to make this delicious herbal tea - strawberry leaves!
You can either use 3 or 4 fresh leaves, or you can dry the leaves which will allow you to store them for several months.
How to dry strawberry leaves for tea
If you have your own strawberry plants, you'll probably trim off most of the leaves in late summer, and you can use these to make tea. Use only the leaves that look fresh and healthy.
I spread the leaves out on a hot sunny window sill for a few days. First, the leaves will wilt, and then they'll start to dry and go crispy.
Of course, you could also use a dehydrator to dry your strawberry leaves if you prefer.
If you are making tea from dried leaves, wait until the leaves are fully crispy, not just wilted. I have read that wilted leaves have a chemical that can upset your stomach, but if the leaves are either fresh or fully dried, this isn't an issue.
I regularly drink tea made with fresh or dried strawberry leaves, but I haven't tested out the theory of wilted leaves!!
Once the leaves are dry, you can either store them whole in an airtight container or break them up into small pieces.
You can also use the leaves from wild strawberries. They are smaller in size, so if you are using them fresh, add a few extra leaves to the pot.
How to make strawberry leaf tea
Either put 3 or 4 whole leaves or a teaspoon of chopped dried leaves in a heat-proof pot and cover with 250ml boiling water.
Leave to brew for 5 minutes, then strain and you'll have a lovely caffeine-free cup of herbal tea (also known as a tisane or infusion).
Serving and storage
Serve this tea made from strawberry leaves as you would any other cuppa. It's caffeine-free, so you can even enjoy a cup before bed.
Properly dried strawberry leaves can be stored in an airtight container for a few months.
Frequently asked questions
As with many herbal teas, it's best to err on the side of caution and avoid strawberry leaf tea when you are pregnant. Alternatively, consult a medical practitioner to get their advice.
No, strawberry leaf tea does not taste like strawberries, as it's made from the leaves rather than the fruit. It's got a slightly astringent flavour rather like green tea.
